Do any of these questions or statements ring true for you?

  • I wish I could practice an intervention before doing it in therapy for real.
  • It would be helpful to have a dress rehearsal so I could give my best performance.
  • The convenience of online webinars is great, but I often leave without feeling more skilled.
  • I’m not getting the most out of the in-between session task.

OCTC is delighted to introduce the CBT Skills Lab, a new approach to developing skills, refining interventions, and receiving expert feedback.

We are pleased to offer an opportunity to gain experiential learning and skills-based practice that is often absent from webinar-style teaching. This new online workshop is different: it is highly experiential, with a strong focus on practical skills as well as knowledge, and is delivered by an expert in the field.

Places for these experiential workshops will be allocated on a first come first served basis and limited to 14 participants only.

Imaginal reliving is a central element of effective trauma-focused CBT. In their excellent paper, ‘Ten misconceptions about trauma-focused PTSD’, Murray et al., (2022) remind us that despite the expectations of patients to talk about and work on trauma memory, often clinicians are reluctant to do so. Within trauma-focused therapy, both client and therapist avoidance is common, and it has a powerful influence on the interpersonal relationship. Recognising and working with avoidance is critical in bringing ourselves to listen deeply and to transform traumatic experiences. This practice lab will enable you to reflect on your experience of this process, briefly walk you through the theoretical position, and then offer an ABC of how to do reliving and assess hotspots. We aim to help you feel more confident in approaching traumatic memory and aim to help develop your skills.
