Do any of these questions or statements ring true for you?
- I wish I could practice an intervention before doing it in therapy for real.
- It would be helpful to have a dress rehearsal so I could give my best performance.
- The convenience of online webinars is great, but I often leave without feeling more skilled.
- I’m not getting the most out of the in-between session task.
OCTC is delighted to introduce the CBT Skills Lab, a new approach to developing skills, refining interventions, and receiving expert feedback.
We are pleased to offer an opportunity to gain experiential learning and skills-based practice that is often absent from webinar-style teaching. This new online workshop is different: it is highly experiential, with a strong focus on practical skills as well as knowledge, and is delivered by an expert in the field.
Places for these experiential workshops will be allocated on a first come first served basis and limited to 14 participants only.
As clinicians we often come across use of substances but rarely address or know how to address this with clients – if you are wondering about how to do this, whether you work in specialist substance use services or not, come along and learn how to work usefully with this!
In context of substance use, functional analysis can help clients better understand factors that may have become associated to their use including triggers (e.g., internal, and external) and the consequences that may reinforce and maintain it. Functional analysis can also help demonstrate validation, that is, it can help acknowledge, without judgment and criticism, how a person’s use of substances can be understandable given their experience.
Do any of these statements ring true for you?
I work with people who use substances, but I am unsure how to engage them meaningfully when discussing their pattern of use
I would like to practice skills when talking with clients about their use of substances in a way that helps us both gain a better understanding
It would be helpful to have the chance to practice and develop skills to engage clients in discussions around their use of substances
This Practice Lab will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to:
- Engage clients in discussions about their use of substances
- Use functional analysis as a tool to help guide the discussion and help to formulate the function of a person’s use of substances (in a way that compliment any CBT intervention)
- See how using functional analysis can help facilitate a validating, non-judgemental stance
