In line with CBT in general, the understanding and treatment of OCD has been developed and refined through the application of research conducted in the context of “Empirically Grounded” strategies.

In this workshop, the principles and foundations of such strategies will be described and illustrated mainly drawing on examples from the workshop leader’s work. The way that such research contributes to better clinical practice and spawns further research will be described and illustrated. A major emphasis will be how clinicians can incorporate research into their day-to-day practice. Research strategies described will include Single Case Experimental Design (with a range of complexity), Qualitative methods, Quality improvement strategies, scale development, surveys, mixed methods, experimental studies up to and including clinical trials, both open and randomised. The emphasis throughout will be on how this can be practically integrated with day to day working. There will be opportunities to work in small groups to develop research ideas, and participants will be encouraged to form collaborations (or not) according to their preference.

This workshop will be presented by Paul Salkovskis and/or Victoria Bream or OCD research team members
