Many supervisees express a preference for CBT supervision in a small group format, where it is possible to learn from your peers’ cases and dilemmas, as well as benefit from their support and insight in discussing your own therapeutic work. Group supervision, facilitated by an OCTC supervisor, is consistently rated as providing some of the richest learning on our Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses. Experience also suggests these meetings can be enormous fun, and are both intellectually and emotionally sustaining in the sometimes challenging circumstances therapists can face. From a cost point of view, group supervision presents economies of scale, and a group format makes particular sense for those keen to practise and progress in CBT, but who, as yet, have relatively few CBT cases. The six-month course of group supervision comprises 6 x 1 1/2 hour meetings of three supervisees plus supervisor, once a month, over a period of six months. Every session, each supervisee has the opportunity to raise topics of their choice, as time is divided equally between participants. Moreover, supervisees routinely report that they learn as much from their peers’ choices
of topic as from their own. Topics can include questions related to cases, exercises to develop CBT techniques and skills, and building a CBT knowledge base (e.g. recommendations about relevant measures or bibliotherapy). The course is aimed at those beginning to practice, or extending their practice of, CBT. Receiving supervision on your cases on this course should be recognized by BABCP as equivalent to 6 hours of individual supervision toward BABCP Accreditation
