CPD Hours
Delivered by renowned industry expert Sarah Mansfield who shares her invaluable insights and strategies, this workshop aims to reduce the impact of trauma both for clients, their families and the staff working to support them. Being trauma informed is a key part of community transformation as it can lead to better outcomes for clients and improved well-being for staff. There are very high rates of PTSD within adult secondary care populations, yet many staff have had little training in how to assess and work with trauma. There are very good evidence based treatments for trauma if this can be identified yet many severe and enduring clients are not offered this support. This workshop will provide an overview of how to assess for PTSD, Complex PTSD and the related evidence based treatments. Practitioners will also have the opportunity to develop a range of practical techniques to help manage the common symptoms of PTSD and support clients with their recovery as well as practice good self-care.
Key learning objectives and skills:
· To develop working knowledge of PTSD symptoms including working with dissociation
· To understand the difference between PTSD/Complex PTSD and ‘trauma’
· To feel confident in using standardised measures for PTSD/Complex PTSD and understanding how to ask about trauma in a sensitive and safe way
· To understand the principles of psychoeducation for trauma and to practice using this actively with clients as part of a focused intervention
· To understand the principles of breath work and introduce and use a range of breathing exercises with clients
· To understand the importance of imagery and how to use this as part of a focused intervention
· To understand the principles of recovery and develop a trauma informed care plan
This is a clinical skills workshop, and the emphasis will be on participants undertaking an active role in practicing the skills discussed throughout the day.
These workshops are targeted at practitioners working with severe and enduing adult population in community, inpatient and specialist settings. This will suit both qualified and unqualified staff with any level of clinical experience, either as an opportunity to learn new skills or to update and refine current practice.
