It is all too easy to assume that CBT “basic” techniques are passe or will not be sufficient to help all our patients, particularly those with more complex difficulties. Yet there is good reason to persevere with familiar, fundamental strategies, using what we know to best advantage before trying other, less well tested approaches.
This workshop will encourage participants to re-visit and perhaps refresh some of the “basic skills”, appreciating their mechanism and their value in helping people who present with both “straightforward” and “complex” difficulties.
In particular, the workshop will review:
- Use of a collaborative formulation
- Relaxation
- Distraction
- Graded experiments
- Relapse management
- Clinical illustrations will show the value of using CBT fundamentals with a range of patients, including those whose problems are chronic, challenging or who also have a personality-related issues.
