Attachment theory is not always considered when working with people using a CBT approach, when in reality attachment experiences permeate every aspect of the person’s life and are likely to be contributing towards their current presentation and mental health difficulties. Attachment can be conceptualised within early experiences and corresponding belief systems and can impact everyday coping styles such as help seeking behaviours and building, communicating within and maintaining relationships. It makes sense too, that a person’s attachment style will play a part in the therapeutic relationship.
Attachment styles often become noticeable during the perinatal period, where parents become preoccupied with their own parented experiences which impacts their current relationship with their newborn.
The workshop will support clinicians to:
• Have an understanding of attachment theory
• Consider attachment experiences within the formulation process
• Consider how attachment experiences will impact interventions in clinical practice
• Consider how old attachment styles may become more prevalent in the perinatal period and how bonding with babies can be supported
• Reflect upon barriers of some people engaging in therapy and how that may present and can be managed therapeutically.
