COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY IN GROUPS
Debbie Brewin & Joanne Ryder
20th May 2010

There is increasing evidence for the effectiveness of CBT in groups and delivery of treatment in this way can ensure a more prompt access to services. It is also recommended in the NICE guidelines as part of the Stepped Care Approach in Primary Care. You may have already considered this but been held back by questions such as:
• Have I the skill to manage a group?
• Will I be able to decide who is suitable?
• What is the evidence that group intervention is effective?
• What will I do if it all gets out of hand?
This workshop will help you decide if GCBT is relevant for you and, if it is, how to get the most out of it. It will guide you through some of the important considerations that you will need to address when developing and running GCBT, and will discuss some of the obstacles and difficulties that you might encounter along the way, providing you with possible solutions to these. There will be a primary focus on developing and running groups for depression and anxiety.
The format will be an interactive and practical, equipping participants with the skills to develop and run CBT groups in Primary and Secondary care settings.
Content will cover:
• theoretical evidence base for group CBT
• fundamental skills required to develop and run CBT groups
• Practical tips for setting up groups
• Building protocols
• Common difficulties encountered and how to overcome these
• Live practice and video demonstrations
• Resources for use in groups
The workshop leaders are both experienced Practitioners who can give real life examples of how to increase the likelihood of running successful groups in your work setting.
