CBT FOR COMPLEX ANXIETY DISORDERS
Gillian Butler
29th March 2010
This workshop will draw on the cognitive model to provide a framework for understanding and treating the difficulties of anxious people whose problems appear not to fit one of the standard patterns. This may be because they have more than one kind of anxiety; they may be depressed as well as anxious, or they may have long-standing problems more characteristic of someone with a personality disorder. Examples will be provided to illustrate how such problems can be understood and formulated, and how CBT can be used creatively and productively, in particular to help people to overcome complex and subtle types of avoidance. People who have developed many different ways of keeping themselves safe may also apply these strategies during treatment. Particular difficulties addressed will include engaging people in treatment, formulation work, facilitating disclosure, and avoidance of affect.
